Great Tips to Help Your Home This Winter

Show Your Home Some Love This Winter

Cold, wind, snow, and ice all can have a severe impact on your home during the winter season. At DeLeers, we want to make sure your home stays in great shape and we put together some great tips and tricks to do just that.

Exterior

The exterior of your home sees the most impact during the winter. On warmer days, you can take action to protect it from the frigid days ahead.

Home Exterior

  1. Safely clear gutters of debris to prevent water issues.
  2. Fill any cracks or gaps to prevent heat from seeping out of your home.
  3. Remove snow or ice that has stacked up in doorways or windows.
  4. Look for chipped paint, damaged wood, or siding, and fix it as quickly as possible to prevent rot or additional damage.
  5. Clear snow off sidewalks to prevent icing over and cracking.

Plumbing

  1. Check around the house for any exposed pipes.
  2. Wrap exposed pipes above ground with insulation.

Landscape

  1. Clean up salt used for melting to prevent bringing it into your home and damaging flooring or hurting animal paws.

Always walk the property after any major storm and look for:

  • Downed/broken tree branches that need to be removed.
  • Snow that is weighing too heavily on bushes and needs to be knocked off.
  • Running water under landscaping rocks since it can disrupt the landscaping; divert the water to the correct channels.

Interior

Even though the interior of your home is not exposed there are still a number of ways you can increase efficiency and enjoy your cozy retreat.

Energy Efficiency

  1. Conduct an energy audit on your home to determine where drafts/leaks may happen.
  2. Replace the batteries on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  3. Add weather stripping around doors, seal windows and spray insulation whenever you feel a draft.
  4. Program your thermostat to a consistent temperature, even while away from the home, to maintain warmth without using additional energy it takes to heat a colder home.

Emergency Preparedness

  1. Always have candles, batteries, flashlights, first aid kit, bottled water and non-perishable food to last a week in case of a major storm or power outage.
  2. Replace the batteries on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

These steps will keep your home in great condition over the winter months.
